Barge Industry Looks to Vapor Degassing of Vessels
-Safety and Environmental Compliance Cited as Primary Drivers
GEM Mobile Treatments Services, Inc. (GEM) has been called upon by the tank barge community to provide vapor control services prior to cleaning, during residual product removal, and during refilling operations. Barges previously containing products with high volatility such as refined petroleum products leave residual vapors after the barge has been emptied. Such vapors can cause environmental hazard or pose a safety risk. GEM’s vapor combustor units are able to meet the most stringent environmental agency efficiency requirements allowing facilities to stay below required emissions thresholds, per 40 CFR 63, Subpart Y - National Emission Standards for Marine Tank Vessel Loading Operations. GEM provides the fastest lowest emitting technology currently available in the market allowing for safe and efficient vapor freeing of marine vessels.
GEM has been degassing barges for several decades from its West and Gulf Coast offices under the most rigorous environmental and safety standards in the country. A recent accident on the waterfront in Mobile, Alabama has prompted the barge industry to look closely at its environmental and safety practices. Venting flammable and toxic vapors to the atmosphere, while it may be legal, may not be safe. GEM has a history of safely removing volatile vapors from empty barges and destroying them dockside using high-capacity thermal units to evacuate vapors in the fraction of the time it takes alternative technologies. Because of the mobility of their equipment, GEM is capable of mobilizing at a moment’s notice, so customers can minimize service disruptions.
