GEM Support Major Turnaround with Water Treatment Services
The customer operates the 6th largest refinery in the United States in Deer Park, Texas. During a Phenol Unit Turnaround, their cleaning contractor generated 300,000 gallons of highly emulsified rinseate containing a specialized cleaning agent which was contaminated with benzene. Their on-site treatment facility could not treat the cleaning by-product and their choice was either expensive off-site shipping of a hazardous waste or on-site treatment.
GEM proposed using two 150 gallon per minute (gpm) mobile air flotation oil water separators for free and emulsified product removal. Following free product removal, GEM would use its mobile air stripping system for reduction of VOC and benzene concentrations to below facility discharge standards. GEM would also perform vapor control on the mobile wastewater treatment system to minimize emissions generated from the oil-water separation and air stripping processes. The vapor control would be managed by using both a 15 MM Btu/hour mobile vapor combustor and activated carbon technologies.
The customer reduced their disposal costs by over $150,000 as compared to a previous project of similar scope. Because GEM was able to treat the waste water as it was generated, the customer avoided expensive frac tank rental and the space needed to stage them during and after the Turnaround. The customer also helped meet facility waste minimization and sustainability goals by avoiding off-site disposal.
