Customer Chooses Vapor Combustion Technology to Save Propane Cost
A Gulf-based petroleum terminal customer was required to routinely degas a large number of storage tanks per requirements of Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Title 30 Chapter 115, Control of Air Pollution from Volatile Organic Compounds. The regulations call for >90% destruction efficiency or at temperatures above 1400 degrees F. The customer was using Thermal Oxidation and achieving the required destruction efficiency but because of the need to maintain the burn temperature above 1400 degrees, they had significant propane cost which was used as supplemental fuel. The customer approached GEM for any cost savings ideas.
GEM proposed the proprietary Mobile Vapor Combustion (MVC) technology as an alternative to thermal oxidation. Vapor Combustion is a more efficient thermal technology than Internal Combustion or Thermal Oxidation because it can achieve the State-mandated destruction efficiency at temperatures far less than 1400 F. Furthermore, the GEM Vapor Combustors typically offer a higher blower package than others offered in the market, therefore pulling hazardous vapors into the combustion chamber faster than others.
After successfully petitioning the State of Texas for a technological variance for Vapor Combustion to Rule 115 by providing independent source tests performed on each GEM Vapor Combustor, we have been able to offer cost-savings to all customers requiring tank degassing. With the GEM MVC obtaining the necessary destruction efficiency at 900 F, the reduction in propane usage is often one-third to half needed for Thermal Oxidation.
